Big East: Well Red

By Elliot Olshansky - May 22, 2007

At the end of one, it's St. John's 1, UConn 0, as Gil Zayas doubled home Chris Joachim after Joachim singled and stole second.

Still, I can't help but say I'm a bit disappointed by the Johnnies.

Well, not so much the team on the field, as they're playing well thus far. I'm just a little disappointed in the turnout for the team that I figured would be the big draw of the day, being the top seed and local team.

I will say that the St. John's fans who are here are good, enthusiastic fans, and their team is giving them what to cheer about. Sadly, a good number of people are missing out. I never would have figured that the first game of the day would be the best attended of the bunch.

With night having fallen here in Brooklyn, I must say that this is as nice a park at night as it is in the day. It's a lot colder, without a doubt - I wasn't the only writer who bought a new shirt at the table on the concourse - but it's also very picturesque, with the beach and the water off in the distance in right, the amusement park in left, the subway, and baseball under the lights.

Speaking of the lights, the rings that surround the traditional ballfield lights are lit up in neon colors, which is a nice touch. If you have the opportunity to get out here for another day of the tournament, I recommend you do it...it's proving to be a fine college baseball experience.
