Big East: For Want of a Nail...or Not

By Elliot Olshansky - May 22, 2007

You ever heard that old saying that starts, "For want of a nail a shoe was lost/for want of a shoe, a horse was lost," and goes on from there?

IT looked as if Rutgers coach Fred Hill might feel that way for a bit, as Notre Dame took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but the Scarlet Knights have charged ringht back to tie it at two runs a piece in the bottom of the inning.

It started when Brayden Ashdown appeared to have been picked off at first by Scarlet Knights pitcher Steve Healing. However, Ashdown was ruled safe, which appeared from here to be the wrong call.

Ashdown then scored on a Brett Lilley single, and two batters later, Lilley came home on a single by Danny Dressman.

The Scarlet Knights, however, came back in the bottom of the inning, as Tod Frazier scored Frank Meade from third with a single. After Frazier advanced to second - ironically enough, on a failed pickoff - he was doubled home by Mike Bionde, which leaves us where we are now, 2-2 at the top of the fourth.
