Greenville: C-USA Tournament Preview

By Ronnie Woodward - May 22, 2007

The Conference USA Tournament starts tomorrow in Greenville, NC at ECU's Clark-LeClair Stadium and there are a lot of intriguing matchups on Day 1...

Houston and Memphis, seeded fourth and fifth respectively, will start the action at 9 a.m. This could be a make-or-break game for both teams, as they are both fighting for a NCAA regional bid and both finished the regular season with 12-12 records in C-USA. Houston won the regular season series between the two, taking two of three at Memphis in a wild series. The teams combined for 59 runs in three games. Memphis has one of the strongest offenses in the conference. Memphis shortstop Michael Murray leads C-USA with a .391 batting average, and Bill Moss and Joey Lieberman are tied for the conference lead with 12 home runs. Houston's redshirt freshman Wes Musick will try to tame the Tigers' offense. Musick has a 6-4 record and a 3.18 ERA in 14 starts this season.

Top-seeded Rice and eighth-seeded Central Florida will be in Game 2 of the day. Rice is ranked second in the nation and riding an 18-game winning streak. The Owls only lost two games in C-USA this season, and its .917 winning percentage set a new C-USA record. Rice is also the defending C-USA Tournament champion, as it breezed through last year's tournament outscoring its opponents 32-13 in four games. UCF is led by 6-foot-3, 240-pound sophomore Kiki Vazquez. Vazquez batted .366 with 9 home runs and 54 RBIs in the regular season.

Two of the hottest teams in C-USA will meet at 4 p.m. in third-seeded Southern Miss and sixth-seeded UAB. USM has won 10 games in a row, including two C-USA sweeps to end the regular season, while UAB won seven of its final nine conference games and won its final three C-USA series'. USM's potent pitching staff is led by senior Eric Belanger, who posted a 2.37 ERA in 14 regular season starts. UAB senior Ryne Lovdahl leads the team with five home runs and 47 RBIs.

The nightcap features the host team, second-seeded ECU, and seventh-seeded Tulane. The 7 p.m. mathcup will mark the third straight year that these two teams have met in the C-USA Tournament. ECU beat Tulane 4-2 in the opening round of the 2006 tournament, but the Green Wave eliminated the Pirates two days later with a 2-1 victory. Even though Tulane is the lower seed, it has won nine of the last 12 games between the two clubs. Tomorrow night's game will feature two of the best pitchers in the conference in ECU's T.J. Hose and Tulane's Shooter Hunt. Hose has pitched well in pressure situations throughout his career, including wins over Cal State Fullerton's Wes Roemer and Pepperdine's Barry Enright this season. Hunt has a 2.44 ERA and has struck out 95 batters in 92 1/3 innings.
