Little Big League

Louisville shortstop Chris Cates is the shortest player in collegiate baseball. At 5'3", he's probably not much taller than some of the schoolkids who are dancing in the stands in the middle of the fifth inning.

However, the little Cardinal just came up very, very big.

With two outs thanks to a Louisville double play - Jim Gillin had reached on an error - Gus Guida threatened the first hit of the day when he hit a grounder that eluded third baseman Chris Dominguez. Cates, however, was there to scoop it up, turn, and throw going away, and the long throw made it to first just in time to get Guida out.

It was the kind of play that calls forth images of Derek Jeter, and I'm certainly happy to see that sort of thing here in Brooklyn today. However, "Cotton Eye Joe," which was played over the PA a couple of innings ago, should stay in the Bronx where it belongs!
