Low Scoring Affair

By Doug Kroll - May 04, 2007

We're into the seventh inning here at Cougar Field. Rather empty Cougar Field. East Carolina leads things 2-0. I apologize for not having anything through the first few innings, but I spent time in the East Carolina dugout learing the tools of the trade. You'll be able to check out all of that at some point tomorrow when the video goes up.

As for the action, it's pretty much been the T.J. Hose story, ECU's starting pitcher. At one point, he retired 13 straight Houston batters, and has give up only three hits while holding UH scoreless. His slider has looked real good, and his breaking stuff on the right-handers has been lethal.

For ECU at the plate, they have been economical with starter Aaron Brown. The Pirates scored a run in the fourth and then a run in the sixth to build the 2-0 lead, on four hits. They have had baserunners and have had a couple of chances to really bust this thing open, so we'll see if they can take advantage of that here with a couple guys on in the 7th. It's sort of been their achille's heal all season long.

Houston shortstop Bryan Pounds has the hat trick, committing three errors up until this point. He only had seven all season coming into this game. It may have something to do with the field, which was drenched all afternoon and evening yesterday from the storms we had.

As I type, ECU scores on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. I'm impressed with ECU's traveling party, a nice array of parents and girlfriends have made the trip. I'll be speaking with them at some point during tomorrow night's contest.
