MU-UT: Longhorns Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Style

By Glenn Tanner - May 05, 2007

With a diverse population and an affinity for cerveza, the state of Texas is big on celebrating Cinco de Mayo.

The Longhorns did it right today, riding the strong arm of Adrian Alaniz and their right-handed bats to a 5-1 win over Missouri.

Alaniz took a two-hit shutout into the ninth, but was beginning to struggle. A HBP, a double, and a long sac fly cost him his shutout, and he was pulled from the game to a thunderous standing ovation. Joe Krebs came in from the bullpen to record the final two outs on K's.

Alaniz's final line: 8.1 innings, 3 hits, 1 earned run, two walks, and four strikeouts, and 118 pitches.

The Texas offense provided 12 hits. Preston Clark rebounded from last night's nightmare finish with a 3-for-4 day, and SS Chais Fuller delivered three hits and three ribbies.

John McKee had two of Missouri's three hits.

Mizzou is now 32-13 and 13-7 in the Big XII, while Texas is 38-13 and 18-5. They'll meet again tomorrow at 1pm, and a Texas win will clinch the Big XII title. And now I'm off to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a Negra Modela or two.
