MU-UT: Mizzou Does It Again

By Glenn Tanner - May 06, 2007

It really should be impossible to go 8-0 in one-run games.

Impossible, meet the Missouri Tigers, who are now 8-0 in one-run Big 12 games.

Scooter Hicks allowed a couple of singles in the ninth, but he and Mizzou escaped with a 5-4 win over Texas to take the series 2-1.

With the win, the Tigers improve to 33-13 overall and 14-7 in Big 12 play. Most importantly, Mizzou leaves Austin with a signature series win that the NCAA selection committee will look upon very favorably when seeding teams. In fact, if the Tigers finish the season strong (vs. OU, at Okie State, Big 12 Tournament remaining), they could definitely be in the discussion as a #1 seed and a possible host at recently renovated Taylor Stadium.

Today, the Tigers got clutch pitching from their pen, errorless defense, and 12 hits to eke out the win. Brock Bond had four of those hits, and freshman catcher Trevor Coleman delivered two homers. Kyle Gibson (6-3) got the win in relief of starter Ian Berger, and Scooter Hicks terminated Texas rallies in the 8th and 9th to earn his second save.

Just like Friday night, the Longhorn bullpen had one bad inning, and it cost them. This time it was a 3-run sixth, as Joe Krebs was tagged with his first L of the season. Texas bats rapped 10 hits, two each from Chance Wheeless, Russell Moldenhauer, Preston Clark, and Travis Tucker.

The good news for Texas is that Kyle Russell's injury is not serious. He was on the field after the game wearing a brace on his right wrist, and coach Augie Garrido said that it's not broken. Garrido also said that both Jordan Danks (injured last night) and Russell should be back for the A&M series in two weekends.

A Texas win today would have clinched the Big 12 Championship, but Garrido is still confident that will come.

"We're going to win the championship," he told the media after the game. "We're the best team, and we're going to win it."

Missouri heads home for a weekend series with Oklahoma.

Texas doesn't return to Big 12 play until May 18th. The Longhorns have TBA on their schedule for next Saturday. An athletic department representative told me that they're still in negotiations to bring a team in. It will be a SWAC team, and it will be a single game at 2:00.
