MVC: 10-Runned: Shockers Win in 8

By Jean Neuberger - May 25, 2007

The wireless is finally back on after a long delay, so here's what's happened.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for this area, but the real flooding just happened right here in Hammons Field by Wichita State. The Shockers unloaded in the eighth to take a 12-1 lead, which became a final after eight innings thanks in part to the 10-run rule in MVC play. It is the 1,600th career win for Shocker Coach Gene Stephenson.

Wichita State.....0..0..0..1..1..0..2..8.......12..11..2
Evansville.........,0..1..0..0..0..0..0..0.........1....4..2

What a bloodbath in that last inning. Here's how it all went down...

After Gillaspie's double made it 5-1, Danny Jackson advanced him to third with a long fly out to right field. Tyler Hill was then walked, and managed to steal second, putting two in scoring position. Josh Workman popped out to first base, and then the floodgates opened.

Tyler Weber was walked, loading the bases, and Josh Coleman was walked right afterwards, bringing home Gillaspie and making it 6-1 Shocks. Andy Dirks then singled to left, scoring Hill to make it 7-1 while keeping the bases juiced. Derek Schermerhorn then singled to center to score Weber and Coleman, and just like that it was 9-1. Add a double by Matt Brown and another single by Gillaspie, and the scoring concluded at 12-1.

Anthony Capra gets the win, improving to 7-0
Kai Tuomi gets his second tourney loss, falling to 10-4.

Where WSU ends up tomorrow depends on the next game. We know for sure that WSU will play Creighton. However, if Bradley wins tonight, the Shocks-Jays game will be an elimination game, and the winner will meet the Braves for the title. If Creighton wins, Wichita must beat them twice to win the Missouri Valley Tournament.

More to come, as we are 15 minutes away from Bradley and Creighton, in the day's nightcap.
