MVC: 8:40 Start Time

By Jean Neuberger - May 26, 2007

That's the word from the grounds crew here at Hammons Field, confirmed by Erica Stelling, who is keeping us sane right now. I think we're all a little restless up here in the press box.

Erica said the tarp would be pulled at 7:45. It was pulled at 7:44. Not bad.

However, the delay has caused the press box to thin out. Even reporters from the Wichita Eagle have decided to head back home to Kansas. I guess Mother Nature really does hamper journalistic endeavours sometimes.

They're still trying to sweep the water away from the field here, but the teams have made it here to the game. They've been staying at the University Plaza Hotel, located just a block away from the stadium.

Speaking of which....

We're in Hammons Field, which is on Hammons Parkway, next to the Hammons Tower, the Hammons Federal Building, the Hammons Building, and the Hammons Enterprise Center.

See the theme?

This is all named after John Q. Hammons, a 88-year old hotel magnate who owns about 100 hotels all across America. From the Marriott at the World Golf Center , to the Courtyard in OKC that's adjacent to the Ford Center (Hammons also owns the Renaissance in OKC) to Chateau on the Lake in Branson, Mo., Hammons owns a whole slew of hotels. Since he has no kids, he gives money to Missouri State (whose basketball teams play at the Hammons Student Center, and will move in '08 to the JQH Arena), and to Springfield, naming everything after himself.

Basically, we're in Hammonsville right now. A rain-soaked one at that.
