MVC: Another One-Run Inning for the Aces
By Jean Neuberger - May 23, 2007
You've got to give credit to Evansville. The Purple Aces took a beating in the first three innings and have refused to give up, fighting back slowly but surely. However, they wasted a huge opportunity in the top of the seventh.
The Aces have a chance to make this a big inning. Jim Viscomi got an infield hit by beating the throw to first by Bradley 3B Paul Rice. Robbie Minor then doubled down the left field line, and it would've scored Viscomi had it not hit the Webster University sign in foul ground, which kicked the ball into left field and closer to the glove of Justin Carr. Kasey Wahl then singled to left, scoring Viscomi and cutting the lead to 8-4.
After a huddle on the mound, Christl pitched to Pat Tumilty, who hit a grounder to third. Instead of going for the double play, Rice threw to home, creating a rundown that ended with Minor being tagged out, but runners at the corners. Kirk Bascu then came up and hit another grounder to third. Again, Rice went home, and the rundown ended not only in tagging out Wahl, but throwing out Bascu as he tried to reach second on the play.
So, Evansville had a chance to really make it a big inning, but they have to settle for just one again, and Bradley remains in control of this game.
