MVC: Bradley Relishing Hot Streak
By Jean Neuberger - May 23, 2007
Bradley has been a streaky team all year, but right now, they're on a winning streak, and for Braves Coach Dewey Kalmer, things couldn't be going better for his team, as they thumped Evansville 8-4 in our second game here at Hammons Field in Springfield.
Since starting 2-7 in conference play, Bradley has won 12 of their last 16 against MVC foes, and 16 of their last 20 overall, making them one of the hottest teams going.
"We talked after going 2-7, and we decided we all had to play like a team and work that much harder and play that much better," said Braves SS Dan Brewer. "Since then, we've been a much better team."
Can't argue with that statement.
Even Kalmer was surprised at how his team played today, especially with Evansville ace Kai Tuomi on the mound.
"I was expecting a 2-1 game today," said Kalmer. "We played against Tuomi earlier in the season, and it was a 3-2 game, and two of those runs were unearned for Tuomi. He was what, 9-1 going into that earlier game. He's a great, great pitcher. He just didn't have it today."
Kalmer pointed out the seventh inning, where Evansville blew a chance for a big inning with baserunning errors, as the critical point of the game.
As for facing Creighton tomorrow, Bradley will go with RHP Chris Wright. Still no word on who the Jays will pitch.
For now though, all is well in the land of the Braves.
We're still 45 minutes away from the nightcap here at Hammons Field...more to come.
