MVC: Creighton Gets Insurance

By Jean Neuberger - May 23, 2007

For the opening inning and a half, SIU could do no wrong. Now, it seems as if they can do no right.

With their offense barely registering a pulse, the Salukis have stumbled here in the eighth defensively, as Creighton recorded three straight singles, then followed with a routine ground ball by Steve Winklemann that the second baseman couldn't handle, and then when he did, threw it wild past first base.

That was bad, but what makes it worse is that Andrew Small had rounded third too hard and had fallen down, so he was a deer in the headlights as long as SIU held on to the ball. The error though gave Small the chance to get back up and score, making it an 8-5 game, and giving Southern Illinois a deep hole to work out of in very little time.
