MVC: Detwiler struggles, Shox Draw First Blood
By Jean Neuberger - May 23, 2007
Ross Detwiler is going to be a rich man in a couple of months, as some prospects have ranked him as high as the #2 overall pick in this year's MLB Draft. But tonight, Detwiler's had trouble controlling his curve and his offspeed pitches, and Wichita State took advantage of it in the first.
Detwiler got Andy Dirks out to start the Shocker half of the first, but Derek Schermerhorn singled to right, and Detwiler proceeded to walk Damon Sublett, Conor Gillaspie and Tyler Weber in order, loading the bases and scoring Schermrhorn from first. The damage was limited, as Detwiler got Matt Brown to strike out swinging, and then got Josh Workman to ground out to first.
There is no doubt that Detwiler is talented. His pitches have a lot of movement, and his fastball is a solid one. However, you can't ever give gift runs to a team as good as Wichita State. The Bears will have to answer back as we head to the top of the second, with the score 1-0 Shox.
