MVC: Jays Celebrate Game of The Year

By Jean Neuberger - May 27, 2007

Right now, I'm sitting back in the press box, and my knees are buckling. The adrenaline is just pouring still at the moment.

Before I can even go on, that was the greatest baseball game a fan could ever wish to see (unless they were a Shockers fan). That's the game of the year regardless of any sport.

Creighton, in a true test of fortitude, wins it 10-9 in 12 innings, and the jubilant Jays were more than happy to talk about this one.

"Tonight you saw a champion team in Wichita, and you saw what can happen when a young, scrappy team gives their all and fights back," said an exhausted but grinning Ed Servais, Creighton's baseball coach. "We played too tense in that first game, and I was concerned. I told our team after the game that we didn't win 43 games playing that way. We needed to just loosen up and play our style of baseball."

When the Jays faced a Wichita comeback, and then fell 9-6 in the 11th, Servais kept encouraging his young squad.

"Coach told us not to give up," said Andrew Small, who hit the game-winning double. "He told us we'd come back from bigger deficits before, and this wasn't anything we couldn't do again."

Everyone, for a second though, didn't know if Small's double was a hit, or an out.

"I couldn't tell," said Servais. "And you saw our runner at second (Brandon Knox) run back to the bag. (Andy) Dirks had robbed us in the 11th; he robbed us of a couple of hits. I think Tyler Hill was the first to give a hint that they didn't catch it."

"It was a fastball," said Small. "I just got a good piece of it. To win this game...this is the greatest feeling I've ever had in baseball."

It was the greatest for MVP Pat Venditte as well.

"By far," said Venditte. "I was just hoping we'd keep them tied in the 9th, and then just hoping our guys could comeback. I have tremendous faith in these guys, and we all came through tonight."

Was it the biggest win for Servais?

"It's the biggest," said Servais. "There's nothing like winning that first tournament title. We respect Wichita so much. We envy them; they are what we want to be someday. And we're getting there."

So what are tonight's after-game plans? Well, there's a great tape-delayed game on the tube.

"Oh, we're watching it!," said Servais, laughing.

And Creighton will sound off roars through their team hotel in the early morning hours, celebrating this one all over again.
