MVC: Shocker Smallball

By Jean Neuberger - May 23, 2007

Missouri Valley teams are used to playing smallball, and Wichita executed it for a run in the bottom of the second. After Ross Detwiler walked Dusty Coleman on a 3-2 pitch, Blake Hurlbutt laid a sacrifice bunt to advance Coleman to second, and Andy Dirks pushed him to third on a fielder's choice grounder to short. Derek Schermerhorn then doubled down the left field line, scoring Coleman.

Missouri State got out of the inning thanks in part to a play at the plate. Damon Sublett singled to right, but Bears RF Nolan Keane threw a perfect relay home, giving Kyle Paul plenty of time to tag Schermerhorn at home.

2-0 Shockers as we head to the third.
