MVC: Shockers Win, We'll Play One More!
By Jean Neuberger - May 26, 2007
There will be an actual Missouri Valley Championship Game, as Wichita State has finally given Creighton its first loss of the tournament in a dramatic 2-1 win by inches.
Inches, you say?
Yes, and here's how the top of the ninth went down.
Chris Gradoville led it off for Creighton, and he sent a high fly into shallow right that forced Wichita's Matt Brown to dive for it. It fell out of his glove, and Gradoville had a stand-up double to start the inning. Darin Ruf then hit a hard grounder down the third base line, but Conor Gillaspie gloved it, and after making sure Gradoville stayed put, threw out Ruf at first. Andrew Small came up and was swinging for the fences, but struck out swinging for the second out.
Then came Steve Winklemann, who hit a grounder to second that looked to go into right center, but Wichita's Josh Workman dove and got a glove on it, keeping Gradoville at third and turning what would've been a game-tying hit into an infield hit that put runners at the corners. That brought up Creighton's Chad Odgen, who hit a rocket deep and right at the left field foul pole. As the whole stadium held its breath, the ball sailed JUST foul..we're talking less than six inches from the pole. Ogden would ground out to third, and the Shockers survived a fantastic game.
WP - Aaron Shafer (6-2)
LP - Marc Lewis (8-2)
S - Noah Krol
We'll be back at 7:05 tonight for the Missouri Valley title game, featuring these same two teams. For now, we'll see you later from Hammons Field, as Wichita State survives and forces a second game!
