MVC: Shocks Cut Lead in Half

By Jean Neuberger - May 26, 2007

For a second, I thought I seriously jinxed Creighton's Pat Venditte. However, a huge crisis ended with minor damage for the Bluejays, as Wichita State became the first team in 43.2 innings and 17 appearances to score a run on the switch pitcher.

There was some controversy though...

It started with a single by Wichita's Andy Dirks. Dirks would then attempt to steal second, and the play was a lot closer than anyone thought. In my honest opinion, Dirks was out. However, the umpire called him safe, and Creighton Coach Ed Servais shot out of the dugout and sprinted to second base to argue the call. After about two minutes of good old-fashioned arguing, mixed with the trash talking from fans on both sides, Derek Schermerhorn singled to advance Dirks to third. Schermerhorn would steal second (no doubt he was safe there), and a sac fly by Matt Brown to deep center brought home Dirks to make it a 2-1 game.

Oh, how the drama has hit the peak tonight. This game is FUN!
