MVC: Upset, thy name is Missouri State

By Jean Neuberger - May 23, 2007

You want to talk about upsets tonight? How about a team who finished dead last in their conference, only to qualify for their conference tournament because they're hosting it, going out and shutting down the top seed.

Missouri State did just that tonight. Wichita State could not muster anything in the ninth, and with fans still on their feet cheering and screaming, the Bears have stunned just about everyone in the Missouri Valley tonight, beating the Wichita State Shockers 5-2.

The Bears are still on the field, and lots of hugs and high fives are going out. Meanwhile, the Wichita State team is huddled inside their dugout, and no doubt Gene Stephenson is giving them a piece of his mind.

Missouri State (23-32) will face Evansville tomorrow night in the nightcap, while Wichita State has to bounce back in a hurry, as they play Southern Illinois in an elimination game at 11:00 tomorrow morning.

WP - Buddy Braumann (1-3)
LP - Travis Banwart (9-5)

More to come, including a wrap-up of today's action, as we continue here from Springfield.
