MVC: WSU - Creighton...The Beginning or The End?
By Jean Neuberger - May 26, 2007
We're about 10 minutes from the first pitch of a matchup between Gene Stephenson's #1 Wichita State Shockers and Ed Servais's #2 Creighton Bluejays. Creighton needs just one win to win their first ever Missouri Valley Tournament in baseball, while Wichita needs two wins tonight to claim their 16th tournament title.
We've got a small but colorful crowd at Hammons Field for today's showdown. The Shox brought a good contingent, and the gold shirts can't be missed throughout the stands. Meanwhile, Creighton's contingent is much smaller, but much happier. The small Jesuit school took Bradley on a hellacious trip to end the Braves' season last night, and when you've won 24 of your last 26 games, confidence is simply not an issue here today.
Meanwhile, Wichita knows what they have to do. They also know that any chance, albeit a small one, of hosting a regional rides on today's outcome. The Shocks are probably hitting themselves for their utter collapse against Missouri State in the first round of this tournament. Instead of taking a much easier route, WSU now has the extremely difficult task of beating Creighton twice.
Can they do it? Yes. Will they do it? We'll find out.
Creighton will send LHP Marc Lewis (8-1, 3.73 ERA) to the mound to tame the Shockers, while Wichita will counter with sophomore RHP Aaron Shafer (6-2, 2.57 ERA). The Shocks took two of three from the Jays this year in the regular season.
It's the battle of Omaha Steak and Wichita Wheat. Jays and Shockers set to go here in Springfield!
