MWC: Drama In Vegas

By Jason Owens - May 24, 2007

There was high drama just half an inning into the SDSU-New Mexico game. Lobos leadoff hitter Matt Foote has been thrown out of the game by home plate umpire Jason Rogers. Foote led off with a double and ran on a Jordan Pacheco fly ball to deep center. When Brandon Glover caught the ball for the out, Foote went back to second base.

Third baseman Ian Nick Romero appealed to third base umpire Ray Leible and tagged the base, where Leible ruled that Foote had rounded third and didn't touch it on the way back before heading to second. By rule, that is an out.

Foote clearly did not agree with the decision and as he walked back to the dugout got a quick thumb from Rogers. It ended up being a double-whammy as Daniel Stovall crushed a laser to left field for a double that would have certainly scored Foote from second. So the Lobos lost out on at least one run and lose their leadoff hitter and center fielder.

Foote's a senior, so if the Lobos lose tonight, his college career is over.

Neither team has scored as we finish the first inning 0-0.
