MWC: Hot Hot Corner
By Jason Owens - May 24, 2007
The hot corner has had a little extra heat tonight for San Diego State third baseman Nick Romero. New Mexico picked up its third unearned run in the fifth inning to extend its lead to 3-1 and all three runs have come on Romero errors. Romero's first error in the second inning led to two scores for New Mexico State.
In the fifth inning, Romero commited two errors on the same play that led to the third run scored by the Lobos. This time, Romero misplayed a groundball that allowed Ian Hollick to reach first. To compound matters, he committed a throwing error to first that allowed Hollick to advance to second and Matt Hibbitts to score from third.
If it's any solace, Romero did score the Aztecs' only run and made a run-saving play with a strong throw to home in the fourth inning. That probably won't help him sleep tonight if the Aztecs go on to lose this game by a small margin.
