MWC: Lobos, Rebels Look to Keep Up Pitching Pace

By Jason Owens - May 25, 2007

We're back live in Las Vegas as No. 6 seed UNLV and No. 5 seed New Mexico take the diamond on day three of the Mountain West Conference Championship. The bottom two seeds have survived the first two days of the double-elimination tournament, but one won't last beyond this morning's matchup.

UNLV's going to need a big game from Chris Saddoris, who has struggled to an 0-5 record with a 6.90 ERA. His counterpart for New Mexico is Shane Dyer, who sports a 2-1 record with a 4.03 ERA.

So far, both pitchers look solid as we've gone through two innings with just one New Mexico hit as the two teams are knotted up at 0-0. And even though a pitcher like Saddoris doesn't bring in a stellar resume, the solid early pitching isn't a surprise at this point of the tournament.

Pitching has really been the story through the first two days of play. Through six games, we've had three complete games, one complete-game shutout and four one-run pitching performances. In a conference known more for shootouts, the pitchers have really stepped up in the postseason
