MWC: Rebels Mounting Furious Comeback
By Jason Owens - May 26, 2007
You see. This is exactly why I didn't call the game for BYU when the Cougars had a 10-1 lead. Led by a grand slam from Xavier Scruggs, UNLV scored six runs in the seventh inning to turn a blowout into a two-run ball game.
The Rebels, backed by a small but rowdy hometown crowd, are attempting to become just the second six-seed ever in the MWC Championship to advance to the championship round.
The rally started when BYU manager Vance Law decided to send Jacob Perez to the mound to relieve Jordan Muir, who had runners on first and second with one out after pitching 6.1 innings. Muir was losing his stuff, but Perez provided a worst-case scenario for the Cougars. He walked Efren Navarro, Jr. to load the bases and then gave up the slam to Scruggs who hit the ball over the left-field wall. Perez gave up two more hits before leaving the game without getting an out. By the end of the inning, the Rebels had picked up two more runs and had all the momentum in their favor.
