MWC: Rebels Run Out of Gas, BYU Advances
By Jason Owens - May 26, 2007
The hometown Rebels came oh so close to pulling off the storybook ending on Friday, but BYU closer Brad Kidd was having none of it as he put a quick end to UNLV's ninth inning, outing all three batters he faced to secure a 10-9 victory.
Stephen Wells, Kasey Ko, Steve Parker and Wes Guenther all had outstanding days at the plate with at least three hits. Wells, Parker and Ko all logged two RBI each as well and it turned out they needed every last one.
With the win, BYU faces a rematch with TCU in tomorrow's championship series. Playing from the losers' bracket, the Cougars must win two to earn the conference title and an NCAA bid. TCU only has to win one and has all but locked up an at-large bid.
Friday's nightcap is a fitting Friday closer to a thrilling day of baseball that saw the Cougars on both ends of one-run thrillers as they lost the 8-7 heartbreaker to TCU in the afternoon game. They're bound to be taxed for tomorrow's rematch with the Horned Frogs and will need to dig deep to extend their season to another game. It should be interesting to see if they've got anything left in the tank.
