NASHVILLE: A pitcher's best friend

LSU had two on and one out after a controversial play in which Jared Mitchell drew a walk with runner Nicholas Pontiff going from first. Pontiff was thrown out as Mitchell tried to check his swing on a borderline pitch from Vandy's Mike Minor. Third base umpire Jack Cox went to cover the bag at second, then when the appeal went to Cox to see if Mitchell had swung, it was obvious that Cox had not watched the hitter and had no clue, and instead of a possible end-of-the-inning, the TIgers had two on and one out.
No matter. J.T. Wise grounded into a 6-4-3 twin-killing, and the game is still scoreless after 1 1/2.
