NASHVILLE: Another inning, another double play, another bad call

By Chris Lee - May 19, 2007

The umpiring in Nashville this weekend has been horrid, and after Vanderbilt was victimized a few times the first few days, the men in blue seem to be intent on sticking it to the Tigers today.

Nicholas Pontiff led off with a single, and the speedy Jared Mitchell hit a grounder to Ryan Flaherty at short. Flaherty flipped to Alex Feinberg at second, then threw to Brad French at first. Mitchell beat the throw by probably a foot, but was called out.

Earlier, the Tigers may have been hosed on the controversial 9-3 play at first, and a double play in the fourth where Sean Ochinko came very, very close to beating the throw at second if not beating it outright.

Friday night, the same crew blew a call badly at home plate costing Vandy's Alex Feinberg a run, and missed a call at first and second that went against Vandy last night, in addition to inexplicably squeezing Vandy's Mike Minor, very much a control pitcher, though most of the early innings.

In other words, I'm not at all impressed with this crew of Bryan Donnelly, Jack Cox and Fred Cannon.

Still 3-1 Vandy after 6 1/2.
