NASHVILLE: Vandy goes up two

By Chris Lee - May 17, 2007

Vanderbilt missed its chance to break the game open against Charlie Furbush in the fifth, loading the bases with no outs and getting just a run despite having the No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 hitters all getting chances in that situation.

Brad French led off with a single off LSU pitcher Charlie Furbush, then David Macias reached first as third baseman Chris Jackson sailed a throw over first baseman Buzzy Haydel's head at first to put runners at second and third. Alex Feinberg walked to load the bases.

Dominic de la Osa popped to shallow right, not deep enough for French to score from third. Pedro Alvarez took a change-up outside, then a curve in the same spot, then sat on a fastball that he just missed, popping it to shallow left.

But LSU's Blake Dean does not have a good arm, and French scored without much of a problem from third for a 3-1 Vandy lead. Matt Meingasner grounded out for out No. 3.
