OSU-OU: Cowboys take the series

By Tristan Threlkeld - May 06, 2007

For the fifth time in as many regular season games against the Sooners, the Cowboys have won their fifth game in a row over their in-state rival. The Cowboys will hope the weather doesn't delay or cancel the game as they want the sweep for the second consecutive year and the possibility of pushing the Sooners out of the Big 12 tournament, and guess what folks, if you don't make the Big 12 tournament you don't make the NCAA tournament. It may seem hateful, but that's what this rivalry is.

For Oliver Odle he earned his fifth win of the season after looking shaky and awful at times early in the game. Odle allowed only two runs in the first, then shut the Sooners down in six straight innings. He was reluctantly relieved by Justin Friend after going 6 2/3 strong innings. Odle and Friend combined to make the Sooners hit into four double plays. Odle pitched a gem and was followed by ace reliever Friend to give the Cowboys their groove back.

Speaking of getting their groove back. Jordy Mercer has got his groove back after suffering an early season knee injury. In the last two games Mercer has hit the go-ahead runs by homerun fashion. This is a Cowboy lineup that features seven batters that hit .339 or better and Mercer is not one of them. The Pokes are a daunting lineup to face no matter the other team. Last week the Texas Longhorns took away the Cowboy bats by forcing them to hit right at their position players.

With the win the Cowboys are now 33-13 overall and 12-8 conference. The Sooners fall to 28-19 overall and 8-12 conference.

Till tomorrow fellow baseball fans, pending weather. Either way the fans from both teams will sure to be at the "Brick" ready to go.
