ACC: Heels take title

By Glenn Tanner - May 27, 2007

Hard to have a better tournament title game than this.

North Carolina got great pitching and an eighth-inning run to edge Wake Forest 3-2 for the ACC Tournament championship in Jacksonville.

Josh Horton's eighth inning triple drove in the go-ahead run and likely earned him the tournament MVP honors.

Horton and Tim Federowicz each had two hits on the day for Carolina.

Pitching was the real story of the day for UNC. Though Matt Danford was credited with the win (even though he recorded only one out), the Heels got a great start from Luke Putkonen (6.2 innings, 3 hits, 1 earned run, 6 Ks) and a two inning save from Andrew Carignan (2 hits, 0 walks, 1 K).

In only his 4th start of the season after Tommy John surgery last April, Wake starter Charlie Mellies turned in a valiant five innings, allowing only four hits and no walks on 56 pitches. Evan Ocheltree had two of Wake's five hits, and Dustin Hood drove in both runs.

Back in about 30 minutes with quotes and the All-Tournament team.
