SEC: Another Rematch
By Doug Kroll - May 25, 2007
No. 1 seed Vanderbilt looks to stay alive when they face off against No. 8 seed Tennessee, the team that put the Commodores in the loser's bracket on Wednesday with a 6-4 win. The pitching matchup clearly favors Vandy, but it favored them on Wednesday before James Adkins pitched one hit baseball thru eight innings.
For Vanderbilt, it will be lefthander Mike Minor who has an 8-1 record in 12 starts and four other apearances, with a 3.15 ERA. He's a control guy, walking 17 in 74 1-3 innings, while striking out 72.
For the Vols, it will be lefty Nick Hernandez who is 4-3 with a 5.68 ERA in seven starts (20 appearances). He has a very low opponents batting average for a guy with an ERA in the mid 5's, as it sits at .253. But upon further review, 42 walks in 50 2-3 innings will tend to do that.
Hernandez is only a freshman from Hialeah, Florida, and was selected in the 32nd round by the Oakland A's in last year's MLB Draft. Last year, he was basking in the glow of being named Miami-Dade pitcher of the year. Quite the honor with all of that high school talent down there.
As for Vandy's Minor, he's also a freshman, and was also drafted. Minor was taken in the 13th round by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in this past draft.
So two lefty freshmen will take the bump tonight, and the edge goes to the 'Dores. But as they say, that's why they play the games.
Random notes:
Vandy is 7-6 at the SEC Tournament under coach Corbin.
Vandy SS Ryan Flahrety has a 26 game hit-streak coming into this one, which is one shy of the school record of 27 set back in 1991 by Greg Thomas.
Vanderbilt is 11-6 all-time in elimination games at the SEC Tournament.
