SEC: Battle Of Relief
By Doug Kroll - May 26, 2007
As one might imagine, experienced starters at this point in the tournament are tough to come by, so, we'll see a pair of relievers start this one for Ole Miss and Vanderbilt, with the winner moving on to tomorrow's championship game against Arkansas. Vandy will be the home team, while Ole Miss changes uniform tops to be the road team.
The starting pitching matchup:
Righty Scott Bittle will start things for Ole Miss. The former closer has put up good numbers on the season as a whole, but has blown eight saves for the Rebels. But, he's not closing today's game, he's starting. He's 2-5 in 26 games (one start) with a 2.30 ERA, and in 31.1 innings, Bittle has struck out 55 batters, and opponents are hitting just .220 off him.
Righty Ty Davis gets the call for Vanderbilt. Davis has been solid as well out of the 'pen mostly, in 17 appearances (2 starts), Davis is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA. Opponents are only hitting .179 off of the Austin, Texas native.
Here's a look at each of these guys' combined three starts:
For Ty Davis:
March 20 vs. Western Kentucky: 1.2 innings, 2 hits, 2 runs, four walks, one strikeout
April 18 at Middle Tennessee: 4.1 innings, 8 hits, 8 runs, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts
For Scott Bittle:
April 24 vs. Murray State: 3 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 5 strikeouts, 0 walks, picked up the victory
