SEC: First One Complete

By Doug Kroll - May 23, 2007

First one is in the books from Hoover, and Arkansas advances to the winner's bracket with a 6-0 win. The story of the game is Nick Schmidt, who completed a complete game, two hitter.

Schmidt ended up giving up a hit and a walk to lead off the ninth, but followed that with a double play to get out of trouble. He finished with four walks and six strikeouts while throwing a VERY econmoical 103 pitches in the process. Hats off to him, as he lowered his ERA to 2.64 with his fifth complete game of the season.

Believe it or not, it's the first hitter in SEC Tournament history, how 'bout that. AND, it's the first Arkansas shutout away from home since downing Vanderbilt in Nashville in 1994. Jeez, you just never know what you'll see when you come to the ballpark. And it's only game one of who knows how many this week here.

Wayne Hrozek's RBI single in the second inning that scored Danny Hamblin proved to be the game-winning hit, with Arkansas winning 6-0. But the big blow that put this game way out of reach was a three-run bomb by Hamblin, his 21st of the season, that opened things up, 5-0 in the third inning.

Got to give credit to Alabama starter Tommy Hunter, who got things together, albeit a bit too little too late, shutting Arkansas down once they were up 5-0.

It's the No. 3-No. 6 game coming up next with Florida and South Carolina getting in their warmups as we're a half hour from first pitch.
