SEC: Hats Off
By Doug Kroll - May 23, 2007
As Tennessee and Vanderbilt take their warm ups on the field, let's go over what we saw in Game Two here in Hoover that lasted 12 innings and went 3:34 (not bad for a 12 inning game).
Bottom line for Florida starter Kyle Mullaney, he deserved better. Since the freshman was thrown into the ring as the top starter in the rotation a few weeks ago, this was his best start.
He went six innings giving up five hits and three runs, but none of them were earned, while walking five and striking out one. Mullaney deserve a better fate, but three Florida errors did him in. Not to mention, you really can't walk five guys and get away with it too many times.
David Hurst came in and pitched well for teh Gators, going 5 1-3 innings, giving up five hits and a run, and guess what, it was unearned. Hurst walked two and struck out two as well. So Hurst picks up the loss despite not giving up an earned run, all four S.C. runs were unearned, and that's just unacceptable when you're the lower seed.
On the other side, Harris Honeycutt ran into some problems along the way, but pitched well enough to keep his team in the game. He went 6 1-3 innings while giving up five hits and three runs while walking five and striking out five. Walks were the killer for him, which got his pitch count up to 111.
Curtis Johnson was outstanding for the Gamecocks, coming in and shutting things down, going 4 2-3 innings of no-hit baseball while striking out five and walking two. Finally, Jeff Jeffords pitched the twelfth and picked up his sixth win of the season.
Final line:
Florida 3 6 3
S.C. 4 10 0
So to say the Gators missed an opportunity to get to the NCAA Tournament, may be a legit statement. They would now have to win their next three games in order to finish with a winning record. Ouch. This will be one they certainly look back it.
The Chic-Fil-A grounds crew is wrapping things up by watering the field (I swear chic-fil-a sponsors every sporting event south of the Mason Dixon), and I can't wait to see Vandy for the first time this season. Although we'll have to wait a day to see David Price. Will have that preview up in a few.
