SEC: Life Aint Fair

By Doug Kroll - May 25, 2007

There's something that's just not right about the conference player of the year being left in the on deck circle as his team falls for the final time in his college career, 5-3 to South Carolina. But that's what jsut happened.

With two outs and nobody on and the bottom of the lineup due up, no one thought that LaPorta had a shot at even getting to the plate, but he nearly did. After a couple of walks and a single made it 5-3, Avery Barnes came up with 2nd and 3rd but chopped to third to end things. Remember, LaPorta hit one to the moon in his first at bat of the day, accounting for two of the UF runs on the day. That was also his first hit of the tourney.

A dejected LaPorta slowly walked back to the dugout and dropped the bat and Florida helmet one final time. It's got to be tough for him, as things went south in his final two seasons with the Gators. After making it to the college world series in his sophomore year, they failed to make even the SEC Tournament in his junior season, and things will end early in his senior season.

Remember, they were the CWS runners up only two years ago. Yikes.

Patrick Keating falls to 3-2 on the season, while Mike Cisco improves to 6-2 after a very good outing.

Coming up is a rematch of Tennessee and Vanderbilt that we saw on Wednesday, in which the Vols had to hang on for dear life in order to advance to the winner's bracket. Will have the starting pitchers and other info in a bit.
