SEC: Ready To Go
By Doug Kroll - May 25, 2007
We're set for baseball here in Hoover on Day Three. Only two games today, as Florida meets South Carolina in game one, while Tennessee meets Vanderbilt in game two. Each is a rematch from day one.
Florida will be playing for its season this afternoon, as they come in with a .500 record of 29-29. If they fail to win two more games here, they won't qualify to be eligible for the NCAA Tournament. So who do the Gators turn to to take the mound in the most important game of their season? Righthanded sophomore Patrick Keating who will be making the first start of his collegiate career today. In 20 relief appearances in 2007, Keating is 3-1 with a 5.89 ERA. In 36 2-3 innings, opponents are hitting .318 against him to go along with 22 strikeouts, and has allowed 49 hits.
For South Carolina they turn to righty sophomore Mike Cisco, who enters with a 5-2 record in 11 starts and 13 appearances. His ERA is 4.04 in 71 1-3 innings, and has 60 strikeouts.
Cisco was a freshman all-SEC a year ago, and is 1-0 in his career against UF. He beat Florida on March 25, 2006 giving up five runs on nine hits.
The winner will get a date with Arkansas on Saturday morning at 10am. In Wednesday's game between these two, the Gamecocks scored four unearned runs to comeback from a 3-0 deficit and win things in the 12th, 4-3.
It's the third straight year that South Carolina won the opening game at the SEC Tournament before losing the second game they played in the winner's bracket.
South Carolina leads the all-time series 31-22 against the Gators, and have won three of the four contests in 2007. The last two meetings have ended in extra innings, with that 12 inning affair on Wednesday and back on April 8th when S.C. won 8-6 in 11 innings.
