SEC: Round Two
By Doug Kroll - May 24, 2007
After a loss to their bitter rival late last night, Mississippi State had to be up relatively early today to face the No. 1 seed in this tournament, Vanderbilt. What's their prize for losing? They get to face the best pitcher, and perhaps best player in the nation, David Price.
These two clubs haven't met since 2005 when the Bulldogs took two-of-three from VU in Starkville (after Vandy won the opening game of the series). But a lot has changed since then. The Commodores are the top team in the nation, with three of the top players in the nation. The last time these two met in the SEC Tournament, you have to go all the way back to 1996, and State owns a 3-0 series lead in the tourney.
Vandy is coming off a loss last night to their in-stat rival, Tennessee, when their potent lineup was completely shutdown, so it would be tough to see that lineup going cold for a second straight day (even though they did wake up in the 9th last night, which could be a bad sign for MSU).
I've been looking forward to seeing David Price ever since I heard I was going to Hoover. The likely No. 1 pick is 10-0 on the year in 15 starts with 4 CG's and 164 strikeouts in 114 innings. Opponents are hitting just .204 against him, and he sport sa 2.76 ERA. So who drew the card to oppose him?
Righty Chad Crosswhite will have the honor, with a 7-3 record and a 4.50 ERA in seven starts (18 appearances overall with one complete game). Opponents are hitting .328 against the sophomore, but he does have this in his corner.
Crosswhite is second cousins with Peyton and Eli Manning. Good bloodlines.
Going to head down and catch Price from down low for the first little bit here, but I'll be back in a bit. No smoke today by the way, the rain last night took care of that.
'Till later, I'm also going to try and take some pictures while down there. Wish me luck, first time using the camera I brought.
