SEC: Smoke Is In The Air
By Doug Kroll - May 26, 2007
We're underway on day number four in Hoover, and the smoke from the wildfires is back, blanketing the area in a really awful smelling haze. Arkansas and South Carolina have started, and the math is pretty simple. If Arkansas beats the Gamecocks, and Ole Miss defeats Vandy later, then we only play two games. If either S.C. or Vandy wins, then we have extra baseball here today.
I wanted to make a joke about South Carolina first baseman Justin Smoak and the smoke in the air, but just not at the moment. Maybe later. Anyway here's the pitching matchup for this morning:
First for the home team, South Carolina:
RHP Blake Cooper: He's only a freshman and he's put up real good numbers in his first year in Columbia. He's 7-1 in 10 starts (15 app.) with a 4.50 ERA. Not an overpowering guy as he's only 5-foot-10, but he's been able to get the job done.
For the visiting Arkansas Razorbacks:
RHP Duek Welker: He's in his first season at Arkansas after two years at Seminole State J.C. in Oklahoma. Welker is a native of Puyallup, Washington and has thrown to the tune of a 4.04 ERA and is 5-5 in 16 starts this season. For a 6-foot-7 guy his numbers wouldn't suggest he's been overpowering, with only 65 K's in 84 2-3 innings.
As we play here in the bottom of the second, Arkansas holds a 1-0 lead after Jeff Nutt drove in his 39th run of the season after Logan Forsythe got on base ahead of him.
