SEC: The Great Escapse
By Doug Kroll - May 24, 2007
Another complete game. That's the fourth one that we've seen here at the SSEC Tournament in just the first two days. For a conference known more for its hitting, this is really quite impressive. Vandy's David Price went the distance, although it got real shaky towards the end.
Price finished with 11 strikeouts while giving up five hits and two runs, and got 10 groundballs to boot. It's Price's fifth complete game of the year, not too shabby, especially on 114 pitches.
The lefty allowed a one out double in the ninth to Joseph McCaskill. Then after getting the Bulldogs best hitter, Edward Easley, to pop out to first, Price set his sights on first baseman Mitch Moreland, who fought off a couple of real tough pitches in order to stay alive, before eventually grounding out to shortstop to end things. So, Alabama and Mississippi State are the first two participants to head home, as the field is down six here in Hoover.
Your winner is David Price, who moves to 11-0. Your loser is Chad Crosswhite who falls to 7-4.
Gotta give some credit here to Crosswhite, who ran into some trouble in the thrid and besides that, was real solid. He went six innings, giving up five hits and three runs, and walked three. But he also struck out eight in the process.
Comin gup next, the winner's bracket. South Carolina meets Arkansas, the No. 2-No. 3 game in the first portion, followed by Tennessee/Ole Miss.
Will have a preview up in a bit. 'Till then, I'm glad Arkansas and South Carolina got their signals together because when they both came on to the field to warm up they both were wearing the same color tops more or less. It was Arkansas that changed into their white sleveless variety, while the Gamecocks kept on the Garnet tops.
