UA-LSU: A Day of Horse Races
By Jean Neuberger - May 05, 2007
It's the first Saturday in May, known as Derby Day in the sports world, and while the most famous horse race takes place at Churchill Downs, we've got another record crowd in the forecast here at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville, where Arkansas tries to get back to the top in the SEC's own horse race of a baseball season.
Dave Van Horn, being the diplomat in front of the press, stated simply that his team "was outplayed" last night by LSU.
We know though that Van Horn really jumped on his players for their lackluster performance. Unlike a lot of other conferences, anyone can win in the SEC on any given day. Errors, wild pitches, stumbling on the basepaths....those things just can't happen when it counts. It cost the Hogs a share of first place in the conference, and one should expect a spirited effort from Arkansas today.
However, today's game is that much tougher, as LSU gained a huge boost of confidence for winning last night. LSU took the lead, stayed composed, and won it in the ninth in front of a record crowd of 10,147 at the Baum. When a team can win in a very hostile environment, that's a huge credit to their program, and LSU gets a lot of credit for pulling the upset off.
So....who and what to watch for today?
Let's start with the pitchers. Arkansas will send RHP Jess Todd to the mound toay. Todd is 6-2 on the season, with a 3.53 ERA. Todd's been impressive though in his last two starts, pitching complete game wins against Georgia and Auburn. Todd's a fireball pitcher who throws everything hard and fast. His slider has been clocked at 87 mph (that's right, his slider!) and he will be called to rally the Razorback troops.
LSU will counter with RHP Charlie Furbush . Furbush is 3-6 this year with a 5.14 ERA. However, he's a strikeout pitcher (71 strikeouts to 28 walks this season), and with Arkansas only mustering four hits last night, he'll force the Hogs to hit safely in order to win.
We'll also keep in track of the scoreboards today...not only with Arkansas trying to keep up with #1 Vanderbilt (who currently trails Georgia 6-0 in the fifth), but with Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky, all fighting with LSU to get those last slots in the SEC Tournament.
Currently, here's how the SEC Tournament seeds would go, as of today....
1) Vanderbilt (16-6)
2) Arkansas (15-7)
3) Miss. State (11-9)
4) Ole Miss (12-10 w/tiebreaker on SC)
5) S. Carolina (12-10)
6) Florida (11-11)
7) LSU (10-11-1)
8) Alabama (10-12)
------------------------
9) Tennessee (9-11)
10) Kentucky (9-12-1)
11) Georgia (7-15 w/tiebreaker on Aub.)
12) Auburn (7-15)
We've got ourselves quite a horserace here in the world of SEC baseball.
It's a beautiful day, and we are 30 minutes away from the first pitch!
