UA-LSU: Van Horn Ejected Early...Still Arguing

By Jean Neuberger - May 05, 2007

This will go down as one of college baseball's great tirades...and it happened in the first inning.

Charlie Furbush absolutely NAILED leadoff batter Sean Jones with a fastball to the right shoulder, and Jones was on his way to first when head umpire Larry Short called Jones back, saying that Jones didn't try to avoid being hit. This, of course, sent Arkansas Coach Dave Van Horn into hysterics, as he sprinted to home plate to argue the call. Van Horn repeatedly was yelling "That's bullcrap!" to the ump, getting right in his face, saying "Are you going to call this all night? NO WAY BABY!". The ump continued to argue back until Van Horn dropped the F-bomb, and that was that.

Or was it??

Van Horn continued to argue, getting angrier and angrier as he took off his hat and was shouting at all three umpires, who had gathered together after Van Horn was officially given the heave-ho. The fans roared as Van Horn refused to leave, staying on the field for a good 90 seconds before finally leaving to a standing ovation.

Since then, the crowd has been booing the umps furiously in between every at-bat.

More to come...but wow. More umpire trouble in the first two games than I've ever seen. If it wasn't controversial calls and small strike zones in the first, it's this in the second.
