The press box is abuzz with activity right now, as a terrific fireworks show has just concluded, and the Ray Charles version of "America The Beautiful" is being played over the loudspeakers.
Oh, but the fireworks in the 10th inning were definitely the best of the night.
We'll start with the Ole Miss half of the inning. Tied at 1-1, Chris Rhoads struck out Evan Button, but Zach Miller reached first on a grounder to short that was bobbled by Tim Smalling. Fuller Smith then tripled down the right field line, scoring Miller. Smith then scored on a suicide squeeze that was perfectly executed by Brett Basham. After Jordan Henry was walked, Dallas Keuchel came in to get the last out, and he did, getting Zach Cozart to ground into a fielder's choice at short.
The score was 3-1 Ole Miss, and Baum Stadium was dead. REALLY dead. The "hearing a pin drop" kind of dead.
Cody Satterwhire took to the mound for the Rebels to try and finish Arkansas off. Brian Walker fell in a 1-2 hole early, but fought it off and drew a walk. He was replaced by pinch runner Matt Willard. Willard would steal second, but it proved to be insignificant, as Jake Dugger would draw a walk as well.
Ben Tschepikow came to the plate and took a strike, but Ole Miss catcher Brett Basham tried to pick off Willard at second. The throw went into center field, and the runners advanced to second and third to fire the crowd up. Tschepikow would then hit a high fly ball that sailed into foul ground along the left field line. Justin Henry made the catch, and Willard started to run home. He BUMPED INTO third base ump AJ Lostaglio, who, for some reason, was on the basepath, and it looked like that interference would doom Willard, as Henry's throw was on the money. However, Basham couldn't handle it, and Willard slid home safely to cut the lead to 3-2, as Dugger raced into third.
Logan Forsythe then came up, and Satterwhite was clearly rattled. He walked Forsythe on a full count to put runners at the corners, bringing up Casey Coon with one out. Coon then walked on five pitches, loading up the bases and getting the crowd on its feet as Wayne Hrozek came to the plate, and Arkansas had the winning run on second. With one ball and one strike, Hrozek sent a laser just right of the power alley in right center field, and the fans roared, knowing that at the worst, the score was going to be tied. However, Ole Miss RF Jordan Henry couldn't race fast enough to the wall, and the ball hit the wall, bringing home Dugger and Forsythe and setting off a massive celebration amongst the 9,812 here tonight.
The Hogs first raced to home to greet Forsythe, but the celebration turned to third as a dogpile quickly formed, with the crowd roaring, flags flying, and hog calls filling the night air.
WHAT A BALLGAME!
Forget the NBA, forget all the other sports out there. THIS was the game, and story, of the night.
So Arkansas claims its third SEC West title (1999, 2004). It's the first time that Arkansas has won the West without winning the overall conference crown. The Hogs move to 38-17, 18-11 in SEC play, while Ole Miss falls to 34-21, and 15-14 in conference play.
WP - Dallas Keuchel (6-2)
LP - Cody Satterwhite (3-3)
The pressure is off for Arkansas, at least for now. They have assured themselves of the #2 spot in the SEC Tournament, and hosting a regional is now a 99.99% certainty.
DIAMOND DOLL UPDATE: Earlier I wrote about the injury to a Diamond Doll when Ole Miss catcher Alex Kliman collided with her while trying to catch a foul ball. I was right; the Diamond Doll was indeed Abby Frizzell. She was taken to the hospital, where she had to get stitches, but she made it back to the stadium and was there for the ending. Thankfully, she'll have a very speedy recovery.
So here is how the standings look after tonight's play in the SEC. An asterisk (*) means a team has a guarenteed spot in the tournament.
*1) Vanderbilt (SEC East and overall champion)
*2) Arkansas (SEC West champion)
*3) Miss. State (by percentage points)
*4) S. Carolina
*5) Ole Miss (tie-break over Florida)
*6) Florida
*7) Alabama
8) Tennessee (12-15)
-----------------------------
9) Kentucky (12-16-1)
10) LSU (12-16-1)
11) Georgia (11-18)
12) Auburn (10-19)
Georgia and Auburn can't make the tournament, so it'll be Tennessee, Kentucky, and LSU fighting for the final spot.
Here's the scenarios for the eight spot.
TENNESSEE - Either beat Florida, or have Auburn beat Kentucky AND Vandy beat LSU
KENTUCKY - Must beat Auburn AND have Florida beat Tennessee
LSU - Must beat Vanderbilt AND have Florida beat Tennessee AND have Auburn beat Kentucky.
As for the rest, only the 1 and 2 spots are sure things for now. Positions 3-8 are up for grabs, so Ole Miss will definitely have something to play for tomorrow, while Arkansas tries to improve its RPI and national seeding.
So, 10 innings + a fireworks show...does it get any better? Not for me. This one has worn me out!
That's all from Fayetteville tonight. We'll see you tomorrow at 2:00pm for the first pitch. For now, good night from Baum Stadium, where Arkansas has pulled a 10th inning shocker to win the SEC West Division.
