WCC Preview
By Patrick Creaven - May 24, 2007
Unlike many of the conferences, which include more teams than it excludes in its conference tournaments, there will be only two teams that will compete for West Coast Conference championship this weekend. Regular-season champion San Diego (ranked No. 9 in the latest USA Today/ESPN Top 25) will try to lock up a top-seed for next week's NCAA Tournament, when it meets second-place Gonzaga at Cunningham Stadium in San Diego.
Although there are only two teams competing, many teams across the nation will be keeping an eye on what is happening San Diego, because if Gonzaga pulls off the upset, and wins the best-of-three series, the Zags will most certainly pop the bubble of a team hoping for an at-large bid.
San Diego (41-15, 18-3)
RPI: 11
Last 10: 9-1
Home games: 23-4
The Toreros won 12 consecutive games before losing to Santa Clara in the season finale. During the regular season, San Diego ranked first the in WCC in hitting (.312/.393/.435), second in pitching (3.37 ERA) and tied for third in fielding (.972).
Of the first 11 players named to represent Team USA this summer, San Diego was the only team in the country to have more than one representative, with LHP Brian Matusz (10-2, 2.43 ERA) and OF/LHP Josh Romansky (.335/.398/.437 and a record of 8-1, 3.20 ERA).
San Diego's best hitter this season has been Shane Buschini (.352/.433/.643), who was named WCC Player of the Year earlier this week. Of the Toreros nine starters, seven are batting over .300.
Matusz, Romansky and Matt Couch (8-2, 3.73 ERA) are the Toreros top three starters, with Al Griffin (2.76 ERA, 10 SV) being the closer.
Win or lose the championship series, San Diego has a good chance to be one of the 16 Regional sites for the NCAA Tournament, although, since Cunningham Stadium doesn't meet NCAA Regional standards, the Toreros are hoping the NCAA will allow them to host at San Diego State's Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Gonzaga (32-23, 15-6)
RPI: 78
Last 10: 6-4
Road games: 12-14
The Zags got into the championship series by taking two-of-three games in the final conference series, against traditional WCC powerhouse Pepperdine. With its high RPI, the only realistic chance Gonzaga has of making it into its first NCAA Tournament in 25 years is to win the conference championship this weekend.
Gonzaga ranked fifth in the WCC in hitting (.288/.365/.395), which is led by third baseman, and Spokane-native, Darrin Holcomb (.365/.452/.509).
The pitching (4.76 ERA) also ranked fifth in the conference, and features only one pitcher with an ERA under four. Although, that might be a little misleading, because the Zags pitchers did much better in conference play (3.19 ERA) than non conference play.
RHP Clayton Mortensen was named WCC Pitcher of the Year, with a 1.60 conference ERA and struck out 116 batters in 100 1/3 innings this season.
Like San Diego, Gonzaga has a team fielding percentage of .972.
In the one series between Gonzaga and San Diego this season, the Zags handed the Toreros its one conference series loss of the season, taking two-of-three up in Spokane.
