Wichita State - Fullerton:

By Jeffrey Lutz - May 13, 2007

I was getting ready to start an entry about how fundamentally sound Fullerton is, and of course right before I can begin the Titans' catcher commits a two-base throwing error, trying to catch Damon Sublett too far off first base and throwing it down the right field line

Before that, however, the Titans made two nice force outs at second base. The first was on an attempted sacrifice, when first baseman Matt Wallach seemed to field the ball and throw it in the same motion.

The next got somebody from the WSU dugout ejected. A throw from Wallach appeared to pull shortstop Joe Scott off second base, but Derek Schermerhorn was called out anyway. Somebody from the dugout argued the call and was ejected by home plate umpire Ken McQueen. Stephenson, arguing the call with first base ump Ben Harlow, missed the ejection. When he went to contest it between innings, pitching coach Brent Kemnitz told Stephenson not to bother. Apparently whoever got ejected said something pretty offensive, because WSU's coaches are rarely above arguing.

Anyway, the error got Sublett to third, but the Shockers missed their first scoring opportunity of the day when Matt Brown struck out swining to end the inning. In the top of the second, WSU starter Anthony Capra made an ESPY-level play, reaching behind his back to field a grounder up the middle. Impressive. The Shockers sure needed a break; let's see what they do with it.
