Chapel Hill: Final Wrap

By Kenny Cook - June 08, 2007

In the 9-6 UNC game one Super Regional victory, reliever Rob Wooten (6-1) got the win for the third straight game. Closer Andrew Carignan pitched two scoreless innings to get his 15th save. Curtis Johnson (1-3) took the loss in relief for South Carolina.

"Came from behind again, didn't we?" That's how North Carolina Coach Mike Fox started the post-game press conference after UNC came from behind late to win for the third straight game.

"Nine runs with two outs- you don't see that happen very often" Fox went on. That had to be especially painful for South Carolina and Coach Ray Tanner, since three USC errors were involved in keeping the rallies alive. "Credit them for coming up with a big hit when they needed to", said Tanner.

Josh Horton and Chad Flack had back to back doubles to ignite the sixth inning rally, and they were in the thick of things again in the seventh when eight straight Tar Heels reached base. Horton, Flack, and Kyle Seager all scored a run in each of those innings.

Player of the Game: Chad Flack, UNC
Although it was his error at third base that opened the door to four unearned South Carolina runs when Robbie Grinestaff had a pinch hit grand slam, Flack shook it off and kept in the game to spark the UNC rallies that eventually won the game. Flack's two out, RBI double to right-center in the sixth scored Josh Horton with the Tar Heels first run, and his RBI single in the seventh again brought in Horton and kept things going in the deciding inning.

Could Have Done Better: South Carolina bullpen
After starter Harris Honeycutt had held UNC in check for most of six innings, the first three USC relievers (Curtis Johnson, Jeff Jeffords, Will Atwood) gave up a combined 6 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks in two innings of relief.

With the win, North Carolina is one victory away from a return to the College World Series. They'll try to close out the Gamecocks with freshman pitcher Alex White (6-4. 3.87), while South Carolina will go with Arik Hempy (6-3, 3.38).
