Chapel Hill: Post-Game

By Kenny Cook - June 08, 2007

As expected, the crowd at tonight's game was about evenly split between fans from South Carolina and North Carolina. The capacity crowd was well-behaved, despite the rather strong rivalry that has developed after playing each other now four times in the past six years. I saw one UNC fan who was razzing the Gamecock faithful during the game, but never saw any real chirping back and forth. UNC basketball players Brandon Wright and Wayne Ellington were among the crowd early on. Both were freshmen this past season, and Wright is expected to be a high draft choice in the upcoming NBA draft. Ellington will return to UNC next season.

With the lightning-quick start for SC, the Gamecocks' fans were jazzed early on, but as the game went on and no scoring occurred in the second through fifth innings, things were pretty quiet on both sides. Just the usual back and forth "Game" - "Cocks" and "Let's Go Tar Heels" were about all they could muster. There was very little complaining from the crowd about ball and strike calls, which is pretty unusual for college baseball.

Some of the North Carolina fans sitting behind me were angry at Coach Mike Fox in the fourth inning when he held Tim Federowicz at third base on a one out double by Josh Horton. That was the Tar Heels' first hit of the game, and at the time they were trailing 2-0. "Get in the game, Fox" one fan yelled behind me. It only got worse from their standpoint when Chad Flack flied out to shallow right field and Fox didn't send Federowicz from third. He explained in the post-game press conference that Federowicz is not the fleetest of foot, and he had stumbled coming around second base on Horton's hit and didn't want to kill a potential rally by having a runner thrown out at the plate.

The crowd really started rocking in the sixth inning, however, when Robbie Grinestaff delighted the Gamecocks' with a grand slam to seemingly put the game out of reach at 6-0. The Tar Heel fans quickly got back into things when UNC scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it a game, then they went bonzo in the seventh when UNC erupted for six more to take the game and let the locals go home happy.
