Charlottesville: OSU eliminates Virginia 7-3

By Barney Breen-Portnoy - June 05, 2007

OSU will be advancing to the Super Regionals for the third straight year after knocking off first-seeded Virginia 7-3 to win the Charlottesville Regional. The Beavers will host Michigan in a three-game series that will start on Saturday in Corvallis.
Oregon State won three straight games in which it could have been eliminated.
Virginia has now reached the NCAA Tournament four straight years, but has yet to advance to a Super Regional.

Great regional. I tell you that OSU team has got heart. After last years wins and fighting back this year, wow.

Go Beavs! Backs against the wall again and they come out fighting. Love it!

C'mon guys, is there really any better story in college baseball than the Oregon State Beavers? Nope.

I am a bit new to college baseball...Michigan comes into the tournament as a number 2 seed and knocks off the overall number 1 seed in Vanderbilt. OSU comes into the tournament as a number 3 seed and knocks off a very good, but lesser regarded (than Vanderbilt) Virginia team. Why does Michigan have to go to OSU to play!? Is Michigan getting robbed?

Michigan did not petition the NCAA for a super-regional site. No robbery, just poor planing.

It's nice to see a west coast team go into ACC country and take the regional away from them. Way to go Beavers.

Michigan has to travel to Corvallis because their AD or Coach did not put in a bid to host a regional or super regional game. Oregon State did put in the bid knowing that they probably would not get to host a regional game, but might have an outside chance of getting a super regional game.

The NCAA would like to put the regional in Ann Arbor, but Michigan's stadium isn't ready, & they didn't put in a bid to host a Super. Beavers have hosted Supers the last two years; NCAA gave it to them b/c they're a sure thing. Maybe next year, Michigan will put in a bid to host through Detroit or something.

GO BEAVS!!! OSU is hosting because Michigan did not apply to host a super regional. If you have a problem with it, you need to talk to the NCAA. Congratlations to Michigan, they are obviously an incredible team. But, what OSU has done during the last two season is absolutely amazing.

Michigan didn't submit a bid to host which was due back in May.

GO BEAVS!

Their is really no official criteria the ncaa uses - it is mainly how good you have been in the past years, how many fans will show up, what conference you are part of etc.. (even though they gave out a number of first time regional sites this year)

Most likely Oregon St. got chosen because they are the defending national champs and hosted (and did a great job) last year with lots of fan excitement. The last time Michigan won a regional was 1984 and even though they beat Vandy that didn't automatically get them the host. IF Michigan routinely wins regionls from now on they to may finally get to host one year.

Usually it is just the same old teams from the power conferences that get to host but lately their have been a coupleof "Northern Teams" that have broken through and have earned their way to host. Oregon St, Nebraska, Wichita St. Even Missouri made it this year.

As you can tell I am a big fan of baseball "up north" where you can't play it every day of the year.

Michigan isn't hosting the Super-Regional because they didn't put in a bid to do so. Apparently their home field is being renovated.

Otherwise, Oregon State would be going to Michigan. No robbery, just facility.

No, Michigan is not getting robbed. They did not submit a bid to host a Super Regional because they are renovating their stadium, I do believe.

It is my understanding that Michigan did not bid to host a Super-Regional, something about their stadium renovation perhaps. Since they did not bid to host, there was no chance that they would host. OState bid to host, as they have the last several years, and draws real good crowds.

Michigan did not apply to host a regional or super regional. Probably did not expect to beat Vandy. After Austin Peay nearly beat the Commodores in 12 innings, I was pulling for the upset. I thought there would be an off chance we (Beavs) might host the super regional, or at least have better odds of advancing if the national #1 seed were eliminated.

Go Beavs!

Steve:

Though it seems unfair to Michigan for beating the #1 team in the nation, the decision has to do with submitting bids to the NCAA to host regionals and Super Regional games and not any slight to Michigan. The UM Athletic Department didn't submit a bid to host and Oregon State did. Given the two #1 seeds lost, it came down to that fact alone.

In fact Oregon State took down all their temporary bleachers a week ago after hearing the Beavers seed (#3) and the fact that they didn't get a Regional bid. Rest assured, the eager Beavers in Corvallis will have the 3,000 or so seats as specified in their bid. It should be a great series given how well the Wolverines played Vandy.
