CWS: Back-To-Back Beavs

By Doug Kroll - June 24, 2007

They did it. When everyone counted them out, they have done it. Oregon State is your 2007 national champion, and becomes the fifth program ever to repeat as national champs, joining LSU, Stanford, USC, and Texas to do so. The final score from Rosenblatt was Oregon State 9, North Carolina 3.

This game was really more ugly than a baseball purist would like. Mike Stutes pitched well enough to get the win for the Beavers, going 5 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits and three runs, while walking three and striking out five. He threw 102 pitches, but was still able to pick up his 12th win of the year.

Luke Putkonen just didn't give the performance that the Tar Heels needed him to give. He lasted only 1 2/3 innings, giving up three hits, three runs (two earned), two walks, and struck out a batter while throwing 45 pitches. It was his second loss of the year, as he fell to 8-2.

After the Beavers fell behind in the bottom of the first for the first time in 62 innings (since the regionals on June 5th), they came right back with a three spot in the top of the second and never looked back. SS Darwin Barney launched a two run homerun, his fifth of the season to put the Beavers up on top, and a lead that they would never give up.

The Beavers finished with 13 hits, while UNC finished with nine. The Tar Heels, for the second straight night, just could not get a hit with a runner in scoring position, and the frustration showed in the 7th when head coach Mike Fox sent Tim Fedroff on a double down the leftfield line, and as he rounded third, Darwin Barney made a strike to home and Fedroff was out by a good couple of steps. That would have cut the lead to 6-4, and there was only one out. So instead of 2nd and 3rd with one out, there was now a runner on third and two outs. Ouch.

As for the rest of the Beavers lineup, nearly everyone contributed once again. Five players had an RBI, with three of them driving in two.

There's a whole bunch more to come from Rosenblatt, coming in story format in just a little bit. But for now, the Beavers are your 2007 national champions.
