CWS: Champs For A Reason

By Doug Kroll - June 16, 2007

Oregon State is showing people why they are still defending national champs. It's one thing to win the title last year, and finish this season sixth in their conference. The Beavers proved the naysayers wrong once again, defeating Fullerton, 3-2 in a game that featured some homers and some pretty good pitching.

I guess the homerun ball is the name of the game so far in the 2007 CWS. We had six more today, three in each game. But luckily for OSU, they hit two of them, as Lissman and Santschi each hit homers that proved to be big.

Wes Roemer is your hard luck loser, falling to 11-7 on the year, after going eight innings, giving up seven hits, three runs (only two earned), no walks, and seven strikeouts while throwing 123 pitches.

Jorge Reyes got the win after throwing six innings of very effective baseball. He gave up just three hits, one run, walking two and striking out three.

Now we set up a matchup of two Big West teams and two Pac-10 teams for Monday. Arizona State will meet Oregon State, a team that the Sun Devils went 3-1 against on the year including a sweep on the road, while UC Irvine will meet Fullerton in the loser's bracket. The Anteaters took two of three at Fullerton this year, taking the rubber match 12-6.

The Beavers really struggled in the series against the Sun Devils, as they were already in a funk heading in, and ASU didn't help.

A preview is up for tomorrow's games, which include our first elimination game of the series, when Louisville meets Mississippi State, followed by a titanic matchup between Rice and North Carolina for the nightcap.

That'll do it for now from Rosenblatt. Your winners one more time on the day, Arizona State and Oregon State, your losers are UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton. To sum it all up in a few words, there were homeruns, but yet there were great pitching performances, while the Pac-10 beat the Big West going 2-for-2.

Good night everybody. Video wrapup to come as well, so be on the lookout as CSTV.com's coverage from the College World Series continues.
