CWS: Day Two, Game Two

By Doug Kroll - June 16, 2007

As the day for any West Coast college baseball fan continues, we have another great one set to begin here from Rosenblatt Stadium, as defending national champion Oregon State makes its Omaha return against a Fullerton team that was here in '06 as well.

The Beavers are making their third straight trip to Omaha, the only team to do that, but they took a different route this year. They finished sixth in the Pac-10, and received a third seed in the Virginia Regional. But perhaps it was the experience the team gained last season that helped them come out of their, and wipe out Michigan in Corvallis the next week. Either way, they're back, and hungry for another national title.

As for Fullerton, it's been a different year for them too. They were wondering if they were even good enough to make it into the postseason only a couple of weeks ago, now they know they are and know they might have what it takes to win it all again.

These two teams have meet four times in the past, and Fullerton has taken all four meetings. But they haven't met since 1984 in a series that began back in 1972. The last time they played was at the Riverside Baseball Invitational when CSUF won it 14-5. In 1977, the Titans won 6-1 at home, and in 1972, they won 13-4, and 6-5 at the Anaheim Collegiate Tournament.

But this is a different Beavers team. They have that national championship swagger still. After all, they're the O-State Ballaz.

Here's a look at tonight's pitching matchup:

Fullerton:
Ace righty Wes Roemer will toe the rubber. Not as dominant as last season, Roemer still picked up 11 wins, to go along with six losses. He has 19 games under his belt with 18 starts, including seven complete games. He's really picked up his strikeout totals, with 143 and 136 innings pitched, and is 11-6. Shockingly he had 22 walks this year, about 15 more than all of last season! How dare he!

Oregon State:
Righty Jorge Reyes gets the ball, and he's 5-3 with a 3.13 ERA. In 22 appearances and nine starts, Reyes has 58 K's in 69 innings, and opponents are hitting just .238 against him.

The Fullerton lineup has just two .300 hitters. Quite the difference from what we've seen in the first three ballgames out here. Should be a good one.

Again, keep track following Gametracker, and we'll be back afterwards to discuss.
