CWS: Eat This

By Doug Kroll - June 20, 2007

Welcome to the nigtcap, as UC Irvine gets set to try and stay alive against Oregon State. With a win, the Beavers would return to the championship series after winning it all last year. A beautiful night is on tap, with temperatures still in the 80s.

An interesting pitching matchup has come to light, being that this is the Anteaters' fourth game of the week, while only the third for the Beavers. Oregon State still has a quality pitcher in its arsenal, and they'll roll with him. Righty Daniel Turpen takes the mound, and he's pitched well, going 9-1 with a 3.65 ERA in 13 starts, 22 games on the season. In 88.2 innings, he's given up 89 hits and walked 22 while striking out 57.

For the UC Irvine Anteaters, they'll put their stock in righty Christian Bergman, who has thrown all of 17.2 innings on th eseason, and is 0-3 with a 6.11 ERA. He's appeared in 13 games while starting two of them, and given up 29 hits, while walking four and striking out nine. Opponents are hitting a lofty .363 against him.

Bergman's numbers don't look that good, but he hasn't given up a run in his last three. The last time he pitched was back on June 1 against Wake Forest in the regionals, when he tossed a scoreless inning in their 13-0 win. In his two starts this year, he lasted three innings against Fullerton on April 7, and only 2.2 in a game the following week against Cal Poly.

In 5.2 innings in his starts, he's got a 4.76 ERA, given up 11 hits, 7 runs, but only three earned, while walking none and striking out one.

As always enjoy the ballgame, and come back and see us for postgame analysis, and keep track of the game using Gametracker.
